Guild of Battlefield Guides Waterloo Weekend
10/10/2009

On the weekend 2 - 4 October over 70 members of the Guild of Battlefield Guides met at Waterloo for a conducted tour of the Battlefield. The weekend was a great success both recreationaly and professionally. The highlights of the tour for your correspondent were:

  • The enthusiasm and knowledge of Graeme Cooper who was leading the tour.
  • The French Perspective and the dispelling of many regimental myths by Andrew Field. We are all looking forward to his new book. I do recommend his previous book on "Talavera"
  • The insights into Wellingtons character and his development as a commander `by Julia Page
  • The highlighting of the importance of the Allies troops (Netherlands and German) in achieving the victory over `"The Corsican Ogre"
  • The importance and ferocity of the Battle of Quatre Bras. Thank you Mike Robinson. I do recommend any student of the Waterloo Campaign to read his book~ "The Battle of Quatre Bras 1815"
  • The sight of 70 plus guides and historians forming a square to repel curassiers at Le Haie Sainte under the able direction of Chris Scott.

If you are touring `the Waterloo Battlefield I `would `recommend Martins Grand Hotel as a comfortable base.
